COUNTING YOUR FORTUNE
By Dennis Rookard

Since the mists of time, people have wanted to know what the future foretells. Many and various have been the ways of gazing into the future. Casting sticks or stones in circle, the reading of palms, casting of horoscopes or the laying of playing cards. All have been used. But for some the use of simple numbers has always held a more mystical significance.

Known as Numerology it is in the opinion of Harold Park resident Fred Curtis almost a science. He's one of the few practitioners of this predictive method in the country and acts as the only consultant numerologist to the British Astrological and Psychic Society. Although there are a number of books published on the subject, Fred is proud that he leant his craft from other practitioners and has achieved such a high level that now he is often called upon to act as examiner to newcomers to the method.

Unlike astrology, where the positions of the stars at your birth and though out your life are said to define your personality and predict the future, a fact hotly contested by science. Numerology achieves its results by converting your birth name and date of birth to a set of numbers, which when totalled, reveals a person's personality and character to predict what will influence their future.

But does this method work in practice. Yes is Fred emphatic reply. "I'm the sort of person who doesn't believe anything until I'm absolutely satisfied that it has some truth in it. But" he went on, "after doing countless readings over the years, I am now convinced that there is something in it. If only," he said, "because of the feed back I've had from those who have undergone a consultation. They seem to be very satisfied with what I have told them."

According to Mr Curtis, Numerology works by assigning a number between 1 and 9 to various letters of the alphabet. "The numbering system we use today was developed from it's Arabic and Hebrew roots," he told me, Even the bible he maintains has a reference to the method, quoting the Book of Numbers and its first verse 'Every Man shall be known by the number of his name.' Each letter of your name" he said, "is assigned a number and by counting these numbers a total is reached," which according to Fred is given a value. The same goes for birth dates.

Now when it comes to any form of fortune telling I class myself as an open mined sceptic. So in order to demonstrate the method, Fred offered to show me how it worked by giving me a reading. All he needed was my birth date and full name, Then on a large pad, and with seemingly endless mathematical calculations he set about he task.

The birth date was it seemed fairly easy - just add up the numbers to give what Fred called my path of destiny and also enabled him to read my character. But with my name it was somewhat different. This," maintains Fred Curtis "enabled him to reveal my personality. The theory being that if for example I had not been called Dennis at birth, but Peter I would have had a totally different personality.

Mind you I have long suspected it's probably my middle name of Wendon that has done much to develop my personality. For this was not a name you banded around when young. Not unless you wanted the nickname of Wendy. A name that would have done nothing for my alleged tough guy image around Brentwood back in my youth. After all who every heard of a want-to-be Teddy boy called Wendy.

So it seems you are what your name is. This by the way says Fred with a smile, probably accounts for the change in personality in those women who after marriage adopt their husband's surname. But more seriously he said, "Because the system works in a pattern of nine, every nine years there is a cycle I look at what is happening to the person now and what could happen in the future

Because this form of Fortune telling is not as well known, or as popular as astrology, it does not receive the publicity. But interest is growing among those with a more logical mind. But says Fred. "It is not a fortune telling activity but more a discipline which enables you to see patterns in a persons life. Finally, what about my reading. I have to say that despite my reservations. Fred's reading was unchangingly accurate.
