GENETIC SPROUTS
First published in the Essex Courier
There's nothing like a good health scare to get us all going, And if it can be allied to food, well according to Fleet St, so much the better. So after infected eggs, and mad cow beef, step forward the latest. Genetically altered vegetables. The eating of which apparently , will turn us all into raving mad, Tory voting Triffids *.

Well don't you believe them. For we've already developed such a strain of mind altering crops in the Brussels Sprout. In my view these must be the original genetic altered crops to escape those Norfolk fields. I mean surely mother nature couldn't have invented these horrible nasty little green fibrous growths all by herself could she. I mean, do you know anybody who can say, that, hand on heart they love these things. No, they're dumped on you not because they are good for you, but because generations of gardeners have found that growing the vine on which they cluster is easy, and as they personally can't stand the things either, your the ideal sucker to receive a donation of the things..

I have yet for example to be able to cook up a decent tasting sprout. Oh I can do you a fine mushy sprout complete with that wonderful soapy taste. But for that never to be forgotten taste, I can engineer with my Microwave cooker, a strain of 'hard as bullets' Sprouts. Guaranteed to bend any fork. Yes folks, your average genetically altered Brussels Sprout has been the ruin on many a good dinner. .

I'm not the only one, for have you noticed when out restauranting or dinner partying, that come the end of any meal in which these nasty little green vomit inducing plants have featured, each and every plate has a little pile of uneaten sprouts lurking to one side, which only confirms my suspicions that this is a strain of vegetable, that nature did not invent. .

* For those of you not in the know, Triffids were mindless killing walking Vegetables and the brain child of Nineteen Fifties Si-Fi author John Windham, that after escaping from their research farms brought terror to the land, and the end of civilisation as we know it, in his Si-Fi book - The day of the Triffids.
